THE BUSINESS OF BEING CREATIVE...
06.22.11

We ALL have gifts!
I don't believe that we all have gifts, that's just the fact.
I believe that one of the gifts that God has given me is that of a creative mind. The dictionary defines the word creative like so...
cre·a·tive
adj. having the quality or power to cause a thing to come into being, as something unique that would not naturally evolve or that is not made by ordinary process.
The ability to create, to me, is such an amazing feeling. Whether it be a beautiful image or an amazing design, that need to create drives me. And while my creativity most certainly drives me, that matter of business always seems to pump the brakes! One of the toughest struggles I have encountered since starting my business has been figuring out where the business belongs in my world of creativity. How much to charge?! When to say no?! How to avoid the pressure to follow the crowd because we all know that "everybody's doing it!". Its really tough! Not to mention that fine line between inspiration that leads to motivation vs. inspiration that turns into imitation. My creative mind needs freedom!!!
AgHHHHHH!!!
The freedom to create something unique that would not have naturally evolved on it's own!!! I started my businesses to fill my need to be creative and the obsession with being a profit-earning entity has stifled my creativity. Because no one is successful unless there is monetary gain involved...right?!! My desires became "how do I get more clients?" instead of "how do I capture more memories?" and "how do I get more readers?" and not "how do I share more stories?"! I spent more time trying to look like a pro and get the most business that I was, in essence, following someone else's path. But dang-it, like I said earlier, God has given me the gift of creativity. I have the power to create something unique that is not made my ordinary (or somebody else's) process. And for the first time I feel free to be me! I will charge what I'm worth, I will follow my heart, I will do only what I love. I resolve to RUN my businesses, refuse to let my businesses RUN me and redefine this business of creativity!
Just sayin'
